Bigboy Locomotive #4014

Bigboy #4014 when it was on display at the train exhibit at the Los Angeles County Fairplex in Pomona, California. The collection is owned and maintained by the Southern California Chapter of the Railway and Locomotive Historical Society. The museum is open one weekend per month, plus during the Los Angeles County Fair. In this photo, the Bigboy is hidden behind the Centennial diesel locomotive against a dark background, so only the nose is visible.

Update — as of December, 2012, the Union Pacific is in discussions to obtain #4014 for restoration back into running condition. Of all the Bigboy restoration stories over the years, UP is the only organization that has the money, shops, equipment, and roadbed able to handle a project as large as a Bigboy.

Update — as of May, 2014, Big Boy #4014 has been moved to the Union Pacific Steam Shop in Cheyenne, Wyoming, to undergo complete restoration. It will also be converted to burn oil. It will once again be the world's largest operating steam locomotive and UP intends to extensively use #4014 in the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the transcontinental railroad in 2019.
